Quick answer: How to choose an ablution (wudu) unit in the UAE: types, number of taps, layout, water and drainage, finishes, and what decides the price for mosques.
An ablution unit, or wudu unit, gives worshippers a clean, comfortable place to perform wudu before prayer. In the UAE they are needed at mosques and prayer rooms, labour camps, construction sites, schools, farms, Ramadan tents and large events. A good unit is easy to use, easy to clean and does not leak or flood. This guide explains the types, the features to look for and what decides the price.

Types of Ablution Units
| Type | Best for |
|---|---|
| Open portable wudu station | Events, Ramadan tents and short-term use |
| Ablution cabin (enclosed) | Sites, labour camps, farms and schools |
| Ablution and toilet combination | Mosques and camps where toilets and wudu are needed together |
| Separate male and female units | Mosques, schools and public places |
| VIP ablution unit | Mosques, palaces, majlis and VIP events with premium finishes |
| Ablution trailer | Locations that change often |
Features to Look For
Comfortable Wudu Positions
Each position should have a tap at the right height, a fixed stool or bench, and a foot-washing trough or basin. Space between positions matters at busy prayer times.
Water Supply and Taps
Units connect to mains water or a storage tank. Push or sensor taps save water and stop taps being left running. In summer, water stored in exposed tanks gets very hot, so an insulated or shaded tank helps. See our GRP water tanks.
Drainage
Ablution uses a lot of water, so floors need a proper slope, floor drains and troughs sized for peak use. Units connect to a sewer, a septic tank or a holding tank.

Floors and Finishes
- Anti-slip tiles or vinyl, since wet floors are the biggest safety risk
- Water-resistant wall finishes such as ceramic tiles or PVC
- Stainless steel or tiled troughs that are easy to clean
- Good exhaust ventilation and lighting
Accessibility
A ramp, grab rails and at least one seated position make the unit usable for older and disabled worshippers.
How Many Wudu Positions Do You Need?
It depends on how many people pray at the busiest time, usually Friday or Maghrib, and how long the peak lasts. A small site prayer room may need only a few positions, while a camp mosque needs many more. Tell us your peak number of worshippers and we’ll suggest a layout.
What Decides the Price of an Ablution Unit
- Number of wudu positions, and whether toilets are included
- Open station, enclosed cabin or trailer
- Finishes: standard site finish or tiled VIP finish
- Taps: manual, push or sensor
- Water heater, AC and exhaust
- Water tank and drainage arrangement
- Separate male and female sections
- Delivery, crane and installation

Buy or Rent?
For Ramadan, a single event or a short project, renting may make sense. For mosques, camps, schools and long projects, buying is usually better value and lets you choose the layout and finish. Compare with our guide to portable toilet prices, which follow the same logic.
